Navigation

The pilot here wants to follow

                    o
345 TO to the VOR station.

We can see that the aircraft is
                heading towards the VOR station

(TO) and that the desired course

line is to the left of the aircraft's current position.

This means that the aircraft is to the right of the course line the pilot wants to
                                                        o
follow. Since each dot represents 2 (and there are two), the aircraft must be on
                                                                        o
radial 161 (inbound). His heading is therefore 341 .

If the pilot follows his current course, he will eventually hit radial 165 and from

there he can follow radial 345 away from the VOR station.

In the drawing below you can see how you navigate to a VOR.

                                                                                               o
                                                                        o
The aircraft on the far left is on course 264 - i.e. 6 from the VOR's 270 radial on
its way away from the VOR.

Here you can see how the
                VOR pointers show this

                (the center indicates the

                aircraft's position, and each

                                              o
                of the lines shows 2
                deviation).

                The pilot wants to follow

                radial 270 away from the

                aircraft.
