Navigation
The accuracy depends on:
- The quality of the receiver
- The distance to the transmitter
- The surrounding terrain including high-voltage lines
Accuracy for transmitter and receiver +/- 3 degrees in total. In addition, pilot
inaccuracy of +/- a few degrees must be taken into account.
In the drawing here you can see some transmitter limitations.
o
VOR transmitters must be able to function correctly up to an angle of at least 40
above the horizontal. Cone of confusion approx. 6 degrees.
We can find the range in NM using the following formula:
1,23*√height in feet
Remember, it is on the VHF band, so line of sight is required
o
This VOR instrument shows that there is 345 to or
from the VOR station.
The aircraft may be on radial 165, but there is a flag
warning, which means that we cannot trust the
display. This may be due to errors in the VOR or
because we are outside its range.
