Navigation
9.9.3.4 Navigation by VOR
You can use VOR, like the ADF, to determine your position. You can also use it as
a navigation/reporting point along your route.
Above you can see an aircraft with
radial indicator 345 TO.
The aircraft is south of the VOR
station and flying directly towards the
station. This means that the aircraft is
on radial 165.
When the aircraft passes the VOR
station, the TO indication changes to
FROM indication and the aircraft now
follows radial 345.
If you pass directly over the station, there will be an area (cone of confusion)
where the VOR does not receive any signals.
A flag warning will be issued,
and the TO/FROM indicator will
flash between TO and FROM.
After passing, the indicator will
have changed mode (here from
TO to FROM) compared to
before passing.
If you pass directly on the radial, the needle will be centered.
