UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
Uniquely Dramatic
BY DEANNA BYFORD
This year has flown by, and already three theatre productions have graced the Cascia stage! We started the year with our One Act Competition production of Arsenic And Old lAce performed at Union High School. Our cast of over 20 experienced the opportunity of performing a show, then taking it “on the road” so to speak, as they performed it in a different venue.
In November, our Middle School cast performed the original adaptation Macbeth...Distilled, a Jr. High version of the Bard’s famous tragedy set in the 1920’s. Just imagine Macbeth as a mob boss and Lady Macbeth as his ambitious wife, and you get the picture (although our body count was much lower than the original play).
This year we also launched an audition-only theatre group comprised of 10 students. These young thespians are involved in all the productions, not only acting in the Upper School shows but also assistant directing, stage managing, coaching, and backstage crewing for our Middle School productions. They truly get to experience many of the different areas that theatre has to offer. It is amazing how one’s perspective changes when one gets to experience the “other side” of a situation. This group also performed in their own show which was an in-the-round style of staging where the audience sat around three sides of the performance area. They brought Agatha Christie’s famous mystery, And Then There Were None, to life mere inches from the audience!
And there is still more to come! The Middle School cast is now in rehearsal for Disney’s Aladdin Jr., which will be performed March 30-31 at 7pm.The Upper School cast is also rehearsing, as they bring to our stage that beloved classic, The Sound of Music, on April 28-29 at 7pm.
We hope to see you at all of our productions as you support our students in their artistic endeavors! Whether they are pushing ‘go’ for a light cue, helping actors put on microphones, creating a unique hairstyle, applying makeup, making sure all the props are set before a performance, sewing
a button on a costume, assembling a set piece, or singing and dancing in
the show, theatre is a great big machine that runs on Truth, Unity, and Love as all the members learn to work together to put on a show!
That is truly the uniqueness of theatre; so many different personalities, so many different talents and abilities, all coming together to be part of something larger than themselves, collaborating to create a work of art.
