HEADMASTER’S LETTER
DEAR CASCIA COMMUNITY,
Dear Cascia Community,
“We are happy to serve you here at beautiful Cascia Hall on picturesqueYorktownAvenue, near fashionable Utica Square, in the heart of Tulsa, Oklahoma.” The late Fr. Mike Schwei er, O.S.A. coined this phone message when he served at Cascia Hall from 1990 to 2001. Fr. Mike was a unique fellow in so many ways, so I feel it is only appropriate to use his quote when beginning to talk about the uniqueness of Cascia Hall.
After being around Cascia for over 30 years, many things come to mind that make Cascia unique to me: navy blue blazers, buildings that remind Harry Potter fans of Hogwarts, beautiful grounds, great food in the Dining Hall (our visiting shadows are the biggest fans), Christmas Walk, starting the Upper School day in St. Rita Chapel. These are just a snippet of our unique school through my eyes. If you have been around Cascia, your list will include many other examples, I am sure.
However, the one thing we can all agree on being unique to Cascia is the Augustinian in uence. Priests and Brothers living in the monastery on campus for over 90 years....as far as Tulsa is concerned, you would have to agree that is unique. The in uence of the Augustinians comes from many directions: from Fr. Brian Barker, O.S.A. who serves as our Director of Augustinian Mission and focuses on keeping the Augustinian thread running through all we do at Cascia, to Fr. Bill Perez, O.S.A. who circles the grounds in his El Cid III golf cart keeping an eye on our beautiful campus. The in uence of the Augustinians is what makes us stand apart.
Now back to Fr. Mike. I mentioned he was a unique fellow. He could always make me laugh, from the happy monk stamps he would slap on students’ papers to his uncanny resemblance to Dom Deluise. He had an infectious laugh and was full of joy. Even after all these years....I miss him.
Is Cascia unique? No doubt. Actually, it is what makes us so special.
God’s Peace,
Roger C. Carter Headmaster
"One of a Kind," Fr. Mike Schweifler, O.S.A., served at Cascia Hall from 1991-2001. He died in July of 2009 following a heart transplant.
above: Many unique architectural features of the campus remind young visitors of Hogwarts, especially the spiral stair case, where the senior class is traditionally photographed.
