A New Friend
In 2019 together with my KFC peers I visited the orphanage
in the town of Shakhty for the first time. We came to the kids
with one of the career guidance games of the charity program
“Generation Choice”. The kids treated me with suspect because
they were seeing me for the first time. Having finished the game,
we went to have some tea and there we met each other. a boy
named Igor took a sit next to me and I could see that he wanted
to ask me lots of questions. The dialog started on its own and in
half an hour we both understood that we had lots of common
interests, and in order to discuss all of them it was not enough to
meet each other only once a fortnight! It was so pleasant, easy
and cheerful to talk to him, as if we were not a mentor and her
student but real friends. It was time for us to depart and Igor
asked me, “Will you come next time?” I felt that I did not want to
leave and started crying. And to his question I firmly answered,
“I will definitely come next time!” And I came! And the I came
again, and again: in the course of the entire academic year we
were delivering the program and communicating with the guys.
During one of our meetings we started talking about the
books that we had read and Igor asked me whether I had read
“Metro 2033”. I sincerely replied that I had not read this book,
after which I got summoned and Igor was lost out of sight for
some time. But five minutes later he came up to me holding the
book he was talking about. He gave it to me as a present. I was
so much touched with this gift. And I had to speed up my read-
ing so that we could discuss the plot of the book during our next
meeting.
When I was first joining volunteering my first aim was to
wholeheartedly help others and I could not even imagine that
I would meet a friend! And now every time I hear about the town
of Shakhty, I remember that now I have a friend there – Igor.
