Living Today
I Rather Have Jesus
by Preach Elder Brown
Often times we are reminded of the story in the
bible of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) who
requested his inheritance before leaving his fa-
thers covering. The younger son, after wasting
his fortune (the word 'prodigal' means
'wastefully extravagant'), goes hungry during a
famine. He then repents and returns home,
where the father holds a feast to celebrate his
return. In the story we find that love is demon-
strated before the son leaves, and is present
when he returns. Though we never hear truly
why he left other than he just wanted to go.
There is two important factors that stand out in this story, 1) the son
wanted independence, and 2) the story doesn't mention the presence or
the existence of a mother/mothering figure.
This gives one the reasonable thought that this is a single family home.
Now the younger brother returned to a celebration not that he left, but he
become wise enough to at least return. Many people will not humble
themselves and come back broke and display it, pride usually sets in.
Though we see a full demonstration of love in this story, the love of mon-
ey is still the root to all evil. In the celebration of his return, we find that
he left wealthy, and returned wealthier.
The father celebration included a feast, the best robe (a robe of a king or
prince) a ring was placed on his finger, and then sandals placed on his
feet. This is the royal treatment as the older brother complained he never
received. (Luke 15:29) Though the celebration added the reflection to
rejoice because the prodigal son was deemed as lost and dead, but it was
independence and money that led him away, but it was love that drawn
him back.
It's amazing that Jesus no matter where we go, and what we do, his arms
is still outstretched towards us. Don't become sidetracked on the riches of
the world, where you forget that Jesus needs to be shepherd over your
soul.
Mark 8:36 ~ "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?"
