KIDS LOVE LIFE SKILLS

                                                                        WHY IT WORKS


                                                              When I was growing up learning karate, I literal-
                                                               ly learned the majority of my curriculum in Japa-
                                                                 nese. All the different stances, punches etc. Now
                                                                   to someone who was obsessed with Japanese
                                                                    culture and anime at the time it made me love
                                                                     Karate more. I was a huge karate nerd, and I
                                                                     loved it. However, my mother and my fami-
                                                                      ly were rarely involved in why it was so im-
                                                                      portant to me growing up. There was a gap
                                                                       there, my parents could not recognize the
                                                                       value of martial arts and see why it should
                                                                       be so important to learn. Kids Love Life
                                                                       Skills filled that gap at my karate school.
                                                                        Character development, is more valu-
                                                                        able to a parent than becoming the
                                                                         next champion, or creating a child who
                                                                         doesn’t understand the value of better-
                                                                         ing themselves.  I’ll give you an example
                                                                         of the program, “FOCUS: To pay atten-
                                                                         tion” the idea is to display the life skill on
                                                                         your school wall and display to all your
                                                                         parents to everyone in the class. (in the
                                                                         lobby or sitting area) There are also stu-
                                                                         dent parent handouts that you pass be-
                                                                          fore class for parents to read to see what
                                                                          the child is learning. During class, the
                                                                          instructors relates these life skills and
                                                                        uses it as an example in relation to the
                                                                       technique.  Also creating that  bridge to
                                                                      the parents, so the parents see the value of
                                                                     your curriculum and why students should
                                                                     use this particular life skill on a daily basis.
