Green Ammonia Applications
New Uses - Where Green Ammonia Can Make New Ammonia Applications Feasible
Use as marine fuel
o The International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims to reduce carbon emissions of greenhouse gases due to the shipping industry via the following strategies:
• IMO2030:Targetsareductioninaveragecarbon intensity (CO2 per tonne mile) of at least 40% by 2030
• IMO2050:Targets50%reductionofGHGemissions from shipping by 2050
o To meet aggressive targets by 2050, zero-carbon fuels will play a significant role in the fuel mix beyond 2030. Green ammonia is considered a promising solution to help IMO achieve these targets, making green ammonia’s application as marine fuel one of the most significant end-uses for the product.
o Key advantages of green ammonia as fuel in marine vessels include, high technology maturity, existing infrastructure setup, high energy efficiency (relative to other carbon-free fuels), lower loss percentage in liquid ammonia than liquid hydrogen in the production to consumption journey.
