  Safer Shift-Building
The interactive Shift-Building screen immediately and visibly displays the impact of placing any given combination of carers on the same shift. On all the Green shifts, the number of invariably safe carers exceeds the number of sometimes safe carers PLUS the number of never safe carers by a multiple (which appears in the box - e.g. ... or ...... .
As delegated shift-builders get used to the system, they find that the time taken to build shifts decreases substantially. In the care home illustrated, an exercise that used to take FOUR hours per week ended up taking ONE hour or less.
Carers soon notice the impact of safer shifts. Proud carers no longer have to swallow their pride when they see deliberate infractions of accepted behaviour. In fact, the introduction of safer shifts creates the momentum for the culture change that follows once “risky” carers start being replaced by “safe” ones.
