               Horses are among the few domestic animals whose economic worth
               has permitted a thorough analysis of neonatal mortality. As a

               result, a significant number of primary immunodeficiency
               syndromes have been identified in this species (Fig. 39.6).

               Severe Combined Immunodeficiency


               The most important congenital equine immunodeficiency is severe
               combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Affected foals fail to produce
               functional T or B cells and have very few circulating lymphocytes.

               If they suckle successfully, they acquire maternal immunoglobulins.
               Once these have declined, however, these foals cannot produce
