SESAMOIDITIS
Definition/overview
Sesamoiditis is a common finding in young race-
horses and relates to inflammation of the soft tissues
around the palmar aspect of the fetlock and associ-
ated bony changes in the PSBs.
Aetiology/pathophysiology
Repeated stresses on the palmar aspect of the
fetlock and PSBs can lead to tearing of the soft-
tissue attachments. A cycle of incomplete healing
and further damage can result in an entheseopathy
and bony modelling of the sesamoid bones. This
condition has been associated with suspensory
ligament injury. Alternatively, an acute single
