                    OPERATIVE TECHNIQUE 11.1

                    Lateral or intercostal thoracotomy

                    PATIENT PREPARATION AND POSITIONING
The patient is clipped and prepared over the entire lateral thoracic cavity, extending just beyond the midline dorsally
and ventrally and from the thoracic inlet to the mid-abdomen. The proximal thoracic limb should also be clipped and
prepared to the level of the elbow.
The patient is positioned in lateral recumbency. Positioning a sandbag beneath the thorax, just behind the scapula,
spreads the intercostal spaces, facilitating access within the thoracic cavity. The thoracic limb is secured in extension.
