OPERATIVE TECHNIQUE 6.1
VetBooks.ir odi ed hori ontal wed e resection o the nares
PATIENT POSITIONING
The patient is positioned in sternal recumbency, with the nose pointed slightly upwards and at the end of the operating
table. The nasal planum should be aseptically prepared for surgery.
ASSISTANT
Optional.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
Approach
The naris is slightly lifted by pushing on the base using the thumb of the non-dominant hand. A wedge extending deep
into the cartilage is to be resected.
Surgical manipulations
1 The first incision is started at the medial dorsal-most aspect of the naris, whilst applying some pressure on it with
a finger or thumb, ensuring that the Beaver scalpel blade is angled in a slight mediolateral direction. Care should
be taken to incise deep into the underlying cartilage.
Stenotic nares in a French Bulldog.
2 The incision should be approximately 1 cm deep and should follow the outer curvature of the ala ventrally towards
the lateral aspect of the naris, changing the angle of the blade to more horizontal for the most ventral part of the
incision. The incision is continued laterally as far as deemed necessary.
