SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2019
Disbelief, that was what Siow Ming Kang of U6K felt when he found out that he was chosen as the Sportsman of the Year 2019. He became the pride and glory of Shellabear sports house this year when he successfully obtained gold medals in the 100m, 200m and long jump events. It came as a shock when he revealed that he never qualified for any sports events in his early years. It wasn’t until his final year in MBS that his potential as a skillful athlete became prominent.
“Something deep in my character allows me to take the hits and get on with trying to win.”- these words of wisdom of Lionel
Messi is what Siow Ming Kang lives by. His innate desire to surpass all boundaries was the reason for his triumphant wins. Every day, he would push himself to train for the upcoming Sports Day. His undying passion in sports motivated him to strive for success.
Ming Kang expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him along the way, acknowledging their importance in his life, especially his friends and sports house members. Their endless support and cheers during the competition meant a lot to him as they were the catalyst to his roaring success. Although some of the Shellabear members did not qualify for the sports events, their persistence and tenacity bolstered his motivation to do better during Sports Day. They made him believe that in the end, giving your best shot is better than fear of failure. When asked on his interest in sports-related careers, he expressed that he did dream of being a famous footballer before his interest changed gradually over the years. However, it did not stop him from participating in competitive sports and adapting a healthy lifestyle. Finally, he encouraged the others to always believe in oneself. Visualizing the desired outcome is one of the keys to attaining success as with this, you have one foot in the door.
SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR 2019
“Winning this award is one of my dreams and goals in life,” This was the feedback from 2019’s Sportswoman of the Year, Lim Kit Ee, Natelie from U6M after receiving this prestigious award. Having participated and earned the gold medals in 100m and 200m events, she was still in a state of shock when she first heard her name being announced as the sportswoman of the year. She felt completely overwhelmed and her friends had to pull her back to reality to remind her to step forward to claim her reward.
Juggling academics and sports is no simple feat. However, according to the Chow Thye athlete, she trained very hard for each of her accomplishments. It became a routine for her to train at the park with her friends during weekends. Her training was much more vigorous especially during the weeks leading up to the Sports Day. During those weeks, she would train every day after school to further prepare herself physically and mentally. Driven by her admiration towards Fiona Chew Shun Lin, the previous Sportswoman of the Year, Natelie often looked up to her mentor and was able to find the necessary guidance from her to push forward.
Natelie insisted that her achievements were nothing if it wasn’t for the support given to her by her dear family and friends. Her family would often give her words of encouragement
when she needed it the most and they believed in her even when feelings of doubt and uneasiness constantly haunted her thoughts. Her friends were reliable and they were the ones who would accompany her during her training on Sundays, and cheered the loudest during her runs. Lastly, her advice to her fellow juniors is to always strive hard for the things you want to achieve in life. It might seem difficult at first, but when all your efforts pay off, the feeling is immensely rewarding.
