YONG CHEE SENG AWARD
The Yong Chee Seng Award, one of many prestigious accolades in MBBSKL is sponsored annually by the family of the late Mr. Yong Chee Seng. The award, named in honour of the former principal, rewards an exceptional student who has achieved academic excellence despite facing formidable hurdles in life. Faiz Wahyudin bin Mohd. Awang How, hailing from Upper Six Wesley. was the deserving recipient for the year 2018 with a CGPA of 3.17 for his STPM examinations.
Faiz was totally caught by surprise when he emerged triumphant in winning the award which has been the aspiration of many of his peers. Sincerity and truthfulness are perhaps his most prominent qualities as he cheekily added that he
even was oblivious to the existence of such an award. Perseverance was definitely a key to his success especially during his semester 1 exams when he lost his father. As Accounts and Economics posed an uphill challenge, he opted not to let the difficulties get the better of him. Instead, he doubled his efforts and the rest is history. When asked about his advice for aspiring juniors, he simply mentioned that they should avoid studying at the eleventh hour as it will cause more harm than benefit. Faiz also added that it’s quintessential to keep on praying as it ensures an individual is focused on his goals. To adequately prepare himself to face the STPM examinations, he revealed that extra exercises were a necessity to mastering a plethora of questions that could be tested. Preparing short notes also came in handy in gaining a better and more holistic understanding of a particular subject.
Heartfelt gratitude was also expressed to caring teachers, school administrators, friends and his ever-supportive family without whom overcoming obstacles would have been next to impossible. As for his future plans, Faiz said that he wishes to further his studies in a business- related course. This will consequently allow him to pursue a career in the field of Business Administration.

THE OPTIMAS AWARD 2019
“Champions behave like champions before they are champions”
Each year, the sportsman who achieves great heights in sports is awarded with the Optimas Award. No matter the circumstance, the recipient must have an unbreakable will and go above and beyond in their particular field. They must always be prepared to sacrifice everything to achieve unmatchable victory in sports.
It is undeniable that the recipient, Surrenraj Nathan from 5 Wesley meets all this criteria and more.
During his five years in MBS, Surrenraj has soared to great heights in taekwondo thanks to his talent and hard work and he has managed to bring pride to our nation with his various achievements in international tournaments. Some of the great achievements were the gold medal in the MBW International Taekwondo Championship and bronze in SUKMA for the under 18 division. One of his proudest achievements was his gold in the 2nd South Asia International Invitation Speed Power Taekwondo Championship in Tamil Nadu, India and his gold in the International Open Taekwondo Championship in Perth, Australia.
As Surrenraj received his award, many emotions were present on his face, but none more than pride and satisfaction. All the effort, all the broken bones, bruises and scars were finally given due recognition by the school by way of the award. According to Surrenraj, his secret to success was a strong mind and 1000% effort. Being a star athlete, he could never attain peak performance without effort and a strong mind. He added that with strong determination, nothing is impossible. However, he stated that, in his pursuit of success in taekwondo, he didn’t push aside his academics. In his eyes, both his pursuits and his academics held equal importance.
He wished to express his heartfelt gratitude to his father for allowing and motivating him to pursue his career in taekwondo as well as being his pillar of support whenever he needed him. Surrenraj also wanted to thank his brothers for being his inspiration to succeed in sports and also to follow in their footsteps to receive the Optimas Award.
Despite this being his last year in MBS, Surrenraj has no plans to slow down. He wishes to continue participating in and winning championships and to one day get to a platform that will allow him to engrave his mark on the world. He advises his peers and juniors to strive to achieve something in life and to devote all their effort to their ambitions. We at MBS hope to one day see him achieve his ambition and be showcased to the world on the platform that he deserves.
