THE MAGNIFICENT AWARD
Etching one’s name as a proud recipient of the Magnificent Award is arguably the pinnacle of a student’s life in MBSSKL. This award is given to one outstanding student who not only proves his mark in academics but also excels in the field of co-curriculum as well as possesses exceptional leadership qualities. This year, the prestigious award goes to none other than Ching Weijian who has been nothing less than inspirational to his peers as well as juniors.
Unsurprisingly, Weijian is no stranger to excellent academic results and his remarkable SPM achievement is the icing to the cake. He was extremely happy with his results but had admitted that he wasn’t really expecting it. He said that he had an inkling of his achievements when he was told that he needs to be at the Education Office on the day the results were announced.
An active member in robotics, he has brought fame numerous times to the school by reaching the finals of the National Robotics Competition in 2015 and 2017. It doesn’t just stop there as he even made it to the international level in the Lego Education Robotics Competition in 2018. His English prowess is also truly admirable as some of his accolades even include a Gold Medallist certification in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools.
Weijian expressed his gratitude to his parents, teachers and friends who stood by him in his path to success. In unison with the rest of his peers, Additional Mathematics and Moral were his greatest challenges. One method was where he had prepared himself by attempting past year and trial papers from other states in the months leading to the examinations. According to him, there are no out of- the-box methods to excelling, it’s just pure hard work. His advice to juniors was to never give up even when the going gets tough and to listen in class as it helps to obtain useful pointers. As an MBS-ian, he reminded all students to appreciate the precious time and friends made at MBSSKL.He is currently doing A-Levels in Methodist College but is still doubtful of his future plans and we wish him all the best.

Steadfast – not changing in your attitudes or aims. What does it take for one to be called steadfast? Tan Wei Zhen has the secret recipe to it as he is the proud winner of the Steadfast award for 2018 which is given to the student who obtains the most number of A’s in the SPM examination.
Frankly, Wei Zhen was pleasantly shocked as he did not expect to get 10A+ and 1A-. He had actually started college and was having classes and so he did not manage to come to take his result slip. Ironically, he got to know about his results through one of his friends and felt elated and was more than satisfied with what he had got. He expressed his gratitude to all his subject teachers especially Mrs. Ramani who not only taught English, but shaped students into MBSians with good attitude, being tactful and respectful to everyone. He also remembered his tuition teachers who made sure he fully understood the topics. Last but not least, his parents and brother had always motivated him to do the best and learn from mistakes.
The toughest subject for him was none other than the Chinese Language especially, because of studying in a school where English was so much emphasised and having so many other subjects to handle. Nevertheless, he was really grateful that he had at least managed to obtain an A-.
He believed that constant practise is one of the best strategies to handle school examinations. His advice is to do more past year questions, regardless if they are state or actual SPM questions, so that one can get the hang of it. He hoped that all MBSians will study smart and not waste too much time playing. If one faces study issues, seek help. Don’t pressurize oneself too much and just try one’s best, regardless of the result. Another important thing is to study early and not at the last minute. Besides, he admits that he needs to be pushed
and couldn’t just rely on school teachers, so he went for tuition classes, especially for the Chinese Language. He also studied consistently, but never forgot to take time to relax and enjoy entertainment like music and sports.
He was active in co-
curricular activities, being
a Librarian Committee
Leader, the President
of Scrabble Club and
Badminton Club and Vice-
Captain of Chow Thye
sports house. Normally he
would study in a group in
the beginning to discuss,
ask and clarify whatever questions that he did not understand. Towards the end, he started focusing and studying alone, practised past year questions and marked them immediately to see how much he had mastered the subject.
For him, the result slip is his best reward for the effort he put in. Currently, he has started Cambridge A Levels at Taylor’s College. As an active St. John Ambulance of Malaysia member since Form 1, this has influenced him to pursue the field of medicine.
