SPM TOP SCORERS 2018
TAN JIUN JIE (8A+ 1A)
Jiun Jee has already had a sweet taste of success before as he achieved straight A’s in his PT3 examinations and the same feat was repeated here. Besides a sheer sense of happiness for his excellent SPM achievements, he admitted that he was a tad bit relieved and shocked at the same time. Additional Mathematics was his toughest hurdle but with continuous effort, he managed to overcome it. Jiun
Jie expressed utmost gratitude to his parents for their never- ending support, friends who were also his partners-in-crime as well as his teachers, especially Mr. Thennarasu and Pn. Halida. He added that studying hard and mastering the syllabus was his recipe to success. One cannot make excuses and should be determined to achieve something. Each student also has his or her way of studying which means that they will have to choose a style that suits them. Some months prior to the examination, he attended some intensive classes to sharpen his understanding. Given a choice, Jiun Jie said that he prefers to study alone but would occasionally get involved in group studies. He is currently doing A-Levels at Taylor’s College and plans to go overseas for a degree, possibly in a field concerning Biology or Chemistry.
CHEW ZI YANG (8A+ 1A)
It was like ‘bringing home the bacon’ when Chew Zi Yang of 5Wesley received his excellent results. He felt extremely exuberant and thanked everyone who guided him to the path of success. He likened the exam to eating a monster, all you need is to be strong and hit it back. For the Malay Language, he emphasized on the importance of remembering aphorism and famous quotes to be applied in essays. For
the English Language, he read a lot to grasp the grammar structures and also took the trouble to practice essay-writing to be marked by Mrs Ramani, Pn Flora, Pn Nuraini and Mrs Yap and they guided him into improving his essays. For the Moral subject, he suggested seeking help from the teacher who is well- versed with the answering technique, and here, he specifically thanked Pn Halida. For History, he had to work extra hard to tackle the HOTS questions. Mathematics was a headache to him as he never got above 60 since Form 1, but with the help of his teacher he obtained an A+ for it. Pn Soraya and Pn Rasimah were great assistance to him for Science as they gave lots of past year examinations questions. For Accounts and Economy subjects, he reiterated the importance of doing exercises. He revealed that while he was hard-working at school, he was also an avid computer gamer at home. It seems that his motto was ‘Study Hard, Play Hard’. Currently, he has decided to take the ICAW examination and plans to pursue in the finance, accounting and business field.
SEAN TAN ZIKUN (7A+ 2A)
An elated Sean was definitely all smiles as he was not expecting such good results. Moral was his biggest obstruction as it was a tricky subject to answer. When asked about someone whom he would like to express gratitude to, Sean said that he would really like to thank Mr. Thennarasu, his Chemistry teacher. Despite being strict, Mr. Thenna was always dedicated and helpful in
resolving any of his doubts and queries. He mentioned that another huge challenge that he faced was time constraint which
he described as his “Biggest enemy”. An avid footballer himself, he stressed that effective time management was key in ensuring that all preparations were done right. For Sean, it didn’t really matter whether his studies were done alone or in a group although it hugely depended on the situation. He currently plans to do A-Levels and is hoping to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. As for advice to his aspiring juniors, he reminded them to always pay attention in class and to practice often to sharpen their skills. Phones are distractions to students everywhere which is why they should be kept aside during studies. He also added that relentless effort is the only formula to cope with unexpected hurdles in one’s pathway to success.
LIEW WIN SING (7A+ 1A 2A-)
Win Sing has always been warm and approachable, the same goes to making him spill the beans about his secret which led to his victory in SPM. He was grateful that his results were such as he didn’t score straight As in both his mid-terms and trials exam, but hard work paid off, and he successfully nailed himself down into the list of candidates who obtained straight As, something which the school
is really proud of. He thanked his family for their guidance. According to him, Physics was the most challenging to kill at the battlefield due to its nature of requiring understanding and application. He stressed to his juniors to hit the brakes on games and to start attending intensive classes, topped with revisions and doing past-year questions. “Start doing revisions earlier and make notes.” Attending tuition classes for subjects one is weak in is part of the game too. He believes that subjects like Maths and Add Maths should be done in groups to enhance understanding whereas the rest can be tackled alone. Probably an enthusiast in Biology, he plans to pursue medicine in the future.
CHUN HANSSEN (7A 1A-)
“Expect The Unexpected” is relevant for him as he had assumed his results might be worse than his trials, but on the contrary, he had fought and won a great battle .Quietly and in a composed manner, Chun Hanssen received his results and immediately, a faint but triumphant smile spread across his face. Finally, all the hard work and perseverance which he had put into his studies had finally bore fruit. Feeling delighted,
Hanssen expressed his utmost appreciation towards his friends and teachers who had helped him survive through the hellish experience leading towards his SPM in which he surrendered everything to God and let Him lead the way. It was, however, through hard work and dedication towards his studies that made him walk onto the battlefield with his head up. He advised juniors to always be persistent, steadfast, and “expect the unexpected”. His philosophy perhaps and most importantly was to trust God. It was rather perplexing to others that Hanssen didn’t attend tuition classes. With his ability to study alone, topped with research on the Internet, he was able to do well even in Chemistry which was the hardest subject for him, but all these didn’t stop him from leading a balanced lifestyle. He preferred to study alone, but occasionally, would rely on group chats to discuss whatever he was unsure of. Hanssen is currently doing his A Levels in MCKL but has no plans beyond college for now.
