STPM TOP SCORERS OF 2018
HAU PEI LING
(3A & 1A-; CGPA 3.92)
Hau Pei Ling (3A & 1A-; CGPA 3.92) Hau Pei Ling’s excitement was evident in her eyes and she radiated with exuberance as she spoke. Formerly a Form 5 Science stream student, she found it difficult to adapt and learn new subjects after entering the Humanities stream in Form 6. “At first, certain subjects were tough as it required us to remember specific keywords
to answer the questions. Business Studies was the toughest subject out of all the others. I was struggling with it until the end of last semester.” To excel in it, she did a lot of practices as well as asking for help from her teachers. Initially, she had insecurities and doubts of her own abilities, but she realized that anything can be settled and managed with a little effort and a tinge of gratitude. She deemed her success to be the product of the help and support she had received from her friends, family members and teachers. En Mohammad Zikri, in particular, was caring towards all his students, and had a hilarious personality that brightened her days. Other than that, she thanked her friends and classmates for their overwhelming love and encouragement. “My friends were among the best things that ever happened to me. For example, they knew not to disturb me while I was studying on my own, or they knew how to cheer me up when I was down. I was moved by their little gestures. Being an outgoing person, it was not hard for me overcome distractions like smart gadgets. I knew my priorities, and I made sure it was always ingrained in my mind.” Her passion is towards law and she has been offered a place in the Law faculty in University Malaya. We wish her all the best.
CONAN LOKE YU-QIAN
(2A, 2A- & 1B+; CGPA 3.84)
From Conan Loke‘s perspective, taking 5 subjects had its ups and downs. Subjects like Chemistry and Biology required extra attention and practices. The questions presented in these subjects were extremely focused and specific. Fortunately, he turned to his friends and teachers when faced with such difficulties. He shared his feelings of contentment
after achieving his results, knowing all his hard work had paid off. According to him, in this battle, time was the enemy. “Time management is extremely important. Most of the time, I never got my 8-hour sleep. It was as if sleeping more than a few hours is a privilege that I couldn’t afford. That is why you have to finish everything that is given by the teachers and never procrastinate.” To excel in his studies, Conan was willing to forego his own comfort zone. However, like any other students he would still engage in his favourite pastimes. “I still played computer games in my leisure time. The most important thing is to know self-control and not let your addiction take control. Your own willpower plays a part too.” When asked about his future plans, he stated that he wanted to pursue a career in electronic engineering or software programming. In order to save for his tertiary education, Conan had to work before the enrolment. Although he has stepped into the working life, he could not help but cherish the treasured moments he had with his friends, particularly during the Form 6 athletics event, which was the most memorable part of his life in Form 6.
TAN CHIN KIET
(3A & 1B+; CGPA 3.83)
With a CGPA of 3.83, it is safe to say that Tan Chin Kiet already has a bright future in his grasp. His determination to achieve success was fueled by his innate desire to become a successful businessman in Malaysia. Recognizing the importance of his ambition, he acknowledged that securing a place in the local public university was the first step towards his main
goal. He explained that his road to success was not a smooth one, as it was filled with certain inevitable circumstances and unavoidable personal issues. However, he constantly reminded himself to not let such trivial things to hinder his performance at school. To Chin Kiet, General Paper was the hardest subject to score as the subject itself requires one to have a broad knowledge on Malaysia’s government system. To overcome his problem, he sought the guidance of his teachers and friends to help him with his studies. He expressed that none of his success would have been attainable if not for the inspiring figures in his life. He would like to dedicate his success to his teachers who have taught him well, and his family and classmates for their unwavering support towards his dream. He left an advice to the current juniors, reminding them to always stay on their feet and manage their time wisely. It will be rewarding in the long run as it is a good habit to develop over time. Tan Chin Kiet will further his studies in Business Administration at the University of Malaya.
LIM SEE VEN
(1A & 4 A- ; CGPA 3.75)
Lim See Ven has always known his priorities well and that is why it did not come as a big surprise when the news broke out that he had excelled in his STPM examination with a CGPA of 3.75. He said that his conventional method of studying was his ace in the hole, as he learned to prioritize and finish the tasks without exceeding any deadlines. Coping with 4 Science subjects is not simple,
the addition of General Paper in his list of studies seemed almost unbearable. Recognizing that his studying method comes with a high level of stress, he would often resort to music as a way to relieve his tension. He did not mind putting aside his digital devices if they caused a distraction that would affect his studying performance. He revealed that he always paid attention and took notes in class. He would allocate some time to do more exercises as a mean to strengthen his knowledge. He acknowledged that certain individuals in his life were the catalysts for his success, especially the teachers who were very helpful in terms of giving advice and imparting their knowledge. He was also grateful that his mother was a constant supportive presence as she helped him to keep fit so that he would excel in his examination. He expressed that there were many unforgettable moments in Form 6. The graduation day, in particular was his favourite as he remembered the precious memories and friendships forged throughout the one and a half year. In the time of writing, See Ven is accepting an offer to study in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the National University of Malaysia.
