Start with a visit in the beautiful sestiere of Cannaregio (which is on the main island and not on
the lagoon island of Murano), where the only glass making furnace in Venice has been working
since the 19th century to produce the most amazing color enamels and gold leaf mosaics to
decorate works of art, private spaces and public settings all over the world. Venice for centuries
has been a world capital of artisan glasswork. Stand close to the dramatic fires of the furnace as
the workmen pour the molten glass and test the colors. Here, they have produced mosaic tiles
for projects like Antoni Gaudi’s iconic Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, a project still in
continuous production for over a hundred years. The unique history of this art craft that has been
handed down for four generations, and the mysterious alchemy revives the Byzantine craft of
gold leaf mosaic and the pure smalti (the Italian word for traditional hand-cut mosaic glass) of
Murano’s Renaissance. Andrea will take you into this amazing world made of light and color.
Learn everything about mosaic making, visit the ancient furnace and their library of colored
glass and see the most important parts of the production process.
Afterwards, enjoy the magic of silence and the fun
of a game, while learning to row Venetian style.
Yes, kids love this! A group of young Venetians
started a project to save the traditional historical
Venetian boats and the very unique rowing style
that characterizes the lagoon. Together with
Andrea and an instructor, learn the basics of this
elegant and special rowing style, while discovering
Venice from the poetic perspective that you can get
only from the water. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
