At the Tuesday, January 30 basketball game, Clakr County R-1 High School honored former Coach John McKinzie.
Clark County outscored Palmyra 15-11 in the first quarter, and never looked back. The Lady Indian defense allowed only five points in the second quarter, as Clark County built a 26-16 halftime lead.
In the summer of 1977 John McKinzie moved his young family from Madison, Missouri to Kahoka to be a high school PE teacher and the new varsity boys basketball coach at Clark County R-1. At the time no one knew what a lasting impact this hiring would make. During the next 13 years McKinzie would capture 8 Tri-Rivers Conference titles, as well leading the boys program to their first district title with back-to- back crowns in 88 and 89. McKinzie and his long time assistants Hubert Nelson and Jon Kirchner accomplished the improbable in the late winter of 1989 by guiding his “Nice Little Team” to an upset of previously undefeated and #1 ranked California to qualify for the Final Four. The Indians would rebound from disappointing loss to Bernie and future Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Anthony Beane to knock of St. Pius X and claim the 3rd place trophy. All told McKinzie won 251 ball games as an Indian.
Both teams battled to score nine points each in the third quarter, with the Lady Indians maintaining their 10-point advantage. In the final quarter, the Lady Indian defense stopped the Lady Panthers, allowing only four points.
