The pistol cracks . . . the pack surges forward . . .
Suddenly a burst of speed . . . a runner dashes
ahead, the others dogging his footsteps . . .
As the final turn is rounded . . . fire burns in his
lungs . . . muscles are aching . . . his mind reels
with dizziness.
After the string is broken, hearts beat loudly . . .
lungs gasp for air . . . and victors are rewarded.
