                    IX. Medications for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Box 55-8)
                                A. Alpha blockers
                                             1. Relax bladder neck muscles and muscle fibers in the
                                                prostate, allowing urine to pass more easily
                                             2. Adverse effects include dizziness and retrograde
                                                ejaculation
                                B. 5a-alpha reductase inhibitors
                                             1. Shrinks the prostate by preventing hormonal changes
                                                that result in growth of the prostate
                                             2. May take up to 6 months to be effective
                                             3. Adverse effects include retrograde ejaculation
