a. A strong desire or insistence that one is
the other gender.
b. A strong preference for cross-dressing
in female attire for boys; a strong
preference for wearing masculine attire
for girls.
c. A strong preference for cross-gender
roles in make-believe play.
d. A strong preference for toys, games, or
activities used stereotypically by the
other gender.
e. A strong preference for playmates of
the other gender.
f. Avoidance of rough play and masculine
toys for boys, and avoidance of
feminine toys for girls.
C. Adolescents and Adults
1. Description: An incongruence between one’s
experienced and expressed gender and assigned
gender of a duration of at least 6 months and at least
two of the following assessment findings. Results in
clinically significant distress in social, occupational, or
other important areas of functioning.
2. Assessment
a. Incongruence between expressed
gender and sex characteristics.
b. A strong desire to be rid of one’s sex
characteristics because of incongruence
with expressed gender.
c. A strong desire for sex characteristics of
the other gender.
d. A strong desire to be of the other
gender.
e. A strong desire to be treated as the
other gender.
f. A strong conviction that one has the
typical feelings and reactions of the
other gender.
D. Posttransition
1. The individual has transitioned to full-time living in
the desired gender.
2. The individual has undergone or is preparing to
undergo at least one cross-sex medical procedure or
treatment regimen.
XIII. End-of-Life Care
A. Description: End-of-life care relates to death and dying.
