Interesting Fact
The first online crowdfunded project is thought to have
occurred in 1997.
UK rock band Marillion (pictured here) were unable to
afford to book tour venues in the US after the mounting
costs of recording and releasing of their seventh album.
Without a tour scheduled in the US sales of the new
album were slow.
Disappointed with the news of no planned tour dates
their American fans used the internet to raise $US60,000 so they could pre-book
venues and tour the US. Contributors to the campaign received ticket to the event
and became long- term groupies of the band.
With the success of the campaign Marillion have continued to use the same
techniques and successfully funded the production of their following three albums.
And as they say…….. the rest is history!
