                                                      Orbotech DP100 at Productronica 2013
We had the opportunity to buy an ex-demo system at a really attractive price. It was an old Direct Image system but suitable for us to test the technology in our PCM production.
With a resolution of 35micron line and space, 40-45 MJ of power and an optical alignment camera system for top and bottom layers, it was something really usefull, but finally we were able to use the system for real production after 1 year of trials...
Nothing was easy:
• • • • •
the complicated software was not conceived for PCM,
problem in recognising the optical markers on materials different to copper
no way to image really bright materials, problem with some dry film types,
really low productivity. But...

                                 But...
We discovered that on the materials and jobs suitable for the DP-100, the scrap rate was really low, with less pin holes, less resist lift, less layer to layer alignment problems. Compared with the standard process, we noticed a 60% improvement.
There was a 30% improvement in overall tolerances so the jobs we struggled in keeping tolerances became easy to do.
The production time was reduced by 2 days compared to standard.
In one year we plotted 4.000 films less, saving money, time, storage space, and finally there were no more problems related to ageing of film or scratches
Direct Imaging is our future! That’s for sure!
