Metallic materials used today by PCMI are polycrystals
    _ Metallic materials used typically in most industrial applications are not single crystals
_ They are composed of grains, i.e. small crystals with different orientation in space
_ Each crystal plane behaves differently in etching due to the directionality of bonding energy and the number of atoms that have to be removed by the proceeding electrochemical reactions.
