PCMI 2018: The effect of metallurgical features on the etching performance of stainless steels and iron nickel alloys
However most products used by etching companies
are not in annealed condition but cold-formed to final thickness
_ Most strips used by etching companies are cold-rolled (work-hardened)
_ The higher the deformation at room temperature the more the crystal order is lost.
_ In some cases the deformation is accompanied additionally by phase transformations
(e.g. typical for meta-stable austenitic grades of type AISI301 / 1.4310)

iron-nickel alloy (UNS K93603 or Ni36) in work-hardened (cold-rolled) condition
PCMI 2018: The effect of metallurgical features on the etching performance of stainless steels and iron nickel alloys
The effect of cold rolling was investigated for a 430 (1.4016) strip
_ Samples taken in annealed condition prior to cold rolling
_ and after cold rolling to final thickness
_ Samples were ground and polished to eliminate the effect of surface roughness _ Prior to etching the surfaces were characterized to ensure similar surface topography
