Greetings,
Following are some thoughts from the Northern IL Synod Assembly
Mission Statement of NI Synod: As church (mission outposts) together, the
Northern Illinois Synod will faithfully make Christ relevant to a diverse and changing
world.
Vision Statement of NI Synod: Walking together, loving Christ, loving all, for the
sake of the world.
Our Mission Statement: Growing in Christ, sharing God’s word through worship
and service.
Words I heard over and over during synod assembly, were “innovative” and “walking
together.” The main speaker, Dr. Anna Madsen talked about “walking together for the
sake of the world.” Bishop Clements wonders, “What would it look like, if our church-
es in the Northern IL Synod got serious about working together.” Pastor Schweppe,
presenter at the Congregational Life Forum challenged us with “What is our congrega-
tion going to look like in 2021 -2022? In our changing society, we need to be innova-
tive as we convey Christ’s love in new ways. Food for thought…
th
When Bishop Clements comes in October to worship and celebrate our 175 Anniver-
sary with us, he will be asking us, ”What did God plant us here for today?” During our
time of transition, this question is especially pertinent as we look to our future.
Reading the Synod’s and Trinity’s Mission Statements above, both are about sharing
and telling others about God. We are to be voices of grace, voices of God’s healing
and hope, and voices of calm. How do you think we are doing as a congregation in
fulfilling our mission? How do we begin to have conversations around Bishop Clem-
ents’ question? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Your friend in Christ,
Sharon
