   schools in the Durban area, contributing to the development of ethical, visionary young leaders and addressing socio-economic challenges in line with DUT’s ENVISION2030.The project supports eight under-resourced secondary schools in the greater Durban area and engages 25 student tutors, and various DUT staff and external partners. It impacts approximately 2,000 learners annually through seven key focus areas, including tutoring in gateway subjects, peace and social entrepreneurship clubs, career guidance, and extracurricular activities like a talent show and sports tournament.
Through these diverse and impactful initiatives, DUT remains committed to empowering students, fostering community engagement, and driving sustainable educational and social transformation.
3.5.2 Social Responsibility Projects
The Department of Food and Nutrition in the FAS, in collaboration with the Department of Health and UNICEF, hosted a significant intervention programme in March 2025.The event, which saw the participation of 1,000 DUT students, was centered around the theme “Fix My Food.” This theme encouraged a shift in focus from individual responsibility for addressing obesity to understanding the broader systemic influences on health. It highlighted how complex global systems, rather than individual choices alone, contribute to the rising rates of obesity worldwide.
DUT’s hosted the launch of a new mobile app aimed at addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The event was jointly introduced by the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier and the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison. The App is designed to be user- friendly, offers students and staff an accessible platform for support and resources related to GBV, reinforcing the university’s commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for all.
In a bid to advance gender equity within the renewable energy sector, DUT is leading a training initiative aimed at equipping
100 female TVET lecturers with specialized knowledge in Solar Photovoltaics (PV) and Building Energy and Audit Training (BEAT). This programme aims to enhance skills development and open up new opportunities for women in the growing energy sector.
The FAI continues to drive impactful initiatives focused on advancing education, research, and skills development. One of the key research projects currently underway is a PhD study that explores strategies to enhance the adoption of renewable energy.The research aims to provide valuable insights into improving renewable energy uptake, supporting the global transition to sustainable energy practices. Another important initiative is the AI National Skilling Project, which seeks to train 30,000 youth in AI literacy. This ambitious project is designed to equip young people with the critical skills needed to succeed in the fast-evolving field of artificial intelligence, positioning them to thrive in the digital economy. Additionally, the Microsoft AI University @ DUT continues to offer hands-on
