The Department of Civil Engineering under EBE, remains actively involved with the Vula Project, which includes the Vula Mathematics Academy. This term-long in-service training initiative is aimed at assisting practicing teachers at the Centre for Innovation at Hilton College. The Vula Science Project helps teachers become more confident and skilled in conducting science experiments and loans necessary scientific equipment to under-resourced schools. Many of their exemplary outreach efforts involve bringing the community into the learning environment rather than going out into the community. The event was supported by all six faculties, with fourteen staff members attending the event. This achievement is attributed to the dedication of faculty and department coordinators.
The Department of Town and Regional Planning supports students who volunteer in addressing housing challenges in Durban. In the first quarter of 2025, this work was further developed through engagements between the honours class for Spatial Planning and Environment. Members of the volunteer coalition, which is developing bottom-up approaches to housing in response to climate change pressures, visited the class in February 2025, to deliver a guest lecture. Students from this module also continue to volunteer in the ongoing housing-related project, gaining valuable insights into public participation processes, developing skills in participant observation and project administration, and building their professional networks.
The Departments of Electrical and Power Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Civil Engineering (Midlands) under EBE, had
the opportunity to present to 520 learners in various career guidance events hosted by schools. This exceptional opportunity allowed staff members to consult directly with learners, providing essential information about the various programmes offered at the Midlands campus and assisting potential civil engineering students in making informed decisions about their academic future. These school engagement activities have created a lasting impact by inspiring career aspirations, bridging the education-industry gap, enhancing knowledge and skills, encouraging diversity in STEM, and strengthening community-school partnerships. They also offer early exposure for younger students, sparking curiosity and laying the foundation for future career interests.
The Co-operative Education Unit has fostered a strong relationship with the South African Council for Graduates (SACGRA), an organization dedicated to assisting graduates in transitioning from education to meaningful employment. SACGRA provides internships, workplace training, and skill-building opportunities to prepare young professionals for successful careers. Focusing on rural and municipal areas, SACGRA encourages innovation and entrepreneurship to boost local economies. An MoU has been drafted and will be signed imminently, with SACGRA set to participate in the DUT Annual World of Work Careers Exhibitions event scheduled for August 2025, in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The World of Work Careers Fair is one of DUT’s premier annual events, offering students and graduates the unique opportunity to interact with industry partners and stakeholders, further enhancing their career prospects.
