 training in artificial intelligence, helping students develop practical skills that are in high demand across various industries.
DUT is also actively contributing to cybersecurity education through the Southern Africa Netherlands Cyber School, a free programme run in partnership with the Hague Center for Strategic Studies, the Netherlands Embassy, and Stellenbosch University. As a key member of the South African team, DUT plays a pivotal role in organizing speakers and facilitating discussions that foster the development of cyber skills across Southern Africa.
Furthermore, DUT has launched the Nka’thuto EduPropeller Research Methodology Training Programme, which aims to provide postgraduate students with the necessary tools to teach high school learners how to conduct research. This initiative not only enhances the research capabilities of future academics but also empowers the next generation of students with essential research skills.
These diverse initiatives demonstrate DUT’s ongoing commitment to delivering valuable educational experiences, fostering skills in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and research methodology, while contributing to sustainable development and knowledge transfer across the region.
3.5.3 Partnerships with Local Communities and Organizations
DUT partnered with the Ama-Ravens Athletic Club to host the “Best of the Best” eThekwini Marathon, celebrating the university’s 21st anniversary since the rebranding of the former Durban
Institute of Technology (DIT).The event featured a 21 km marathon, a 42 km Comrades qualifier, and 10 km and 5 km races, providing a range of challenges for participants at different levels.
The DUT’s Student Recruitment team engaged in several outreach initiatives to raise awareness about the university and opportunities for Grade 12 learners. These initiatives have reached 78 schools and 9,224 learners in February 2025.
The Short Course Unit (SCU) at DUT made significant strides in enhancing digital literacy through its partnership with the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA). The SCU has 25 participants from the Non-Profit Company (NPC) Use-IT successfully completed Mobile Digital Literacy Training in January 2025. The university also collaborated with the KZN Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) Department to recruit participants and secure venues for further training.The Unit also supported 78 unemployed youth complete training in some areas of the KwaZulu-Natal Province in February and March 2025.A total of 103 individuals received Mobile Digital Literacy training during the first quarter of 2025.
Moreover, the TTI continued its collaborative efforts with industry and educational partners, including local TVET colleges and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), to support a variety of educational and industry-related initiatives. These collaborations contribute to the advancement of education, skills development, and the strengthening of the university’s community partnerships.
