CATCHING UP WITH JERRY BLANCHARD
When did you retire from the BWL; from what position; and with how many years of service?
I retired October 7, 2011 as a Risk Manager with 26 years of service.
Have you lived in Michigan during your whole retirement or are you a Snowbird going somewhere warm in the winter?
I have lived in Okemos and Williamston, Michigan since retirement.
What have you been up
to since you retired? Hobbies, sports, interests, volunteering?
I have been an officer and director of the Greater Lansing Exchange Club and The Lansing Exchange Youth Foundation; a volunteer on The Community Investment Committee of
the United Way, and assisted
in evaluating proposals for funding for the United Way.
Exercise has been a priority with classes at the YMCA and the Michigan Athletic Club; machine and lightweight workouts; and walking. Several years ago, I needed a change, so I began taking lessons in Ballroom dancing. A change that I enthusiastically endorse for everyone who hasn’t done it.
Travels?
I have had the privilege of visiting New York, several National Parks, New Mexico, Florida, over 10 European countries, Australia (see photo with camel), New Zealand, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Life brings changes. From
the day one retires, the BWL changes as an organization with new hires, retirements, and new challenges and responsibilities for those working. From the outside,
it looks like the BWL is rising
to the challenges; and I wish the BWL continued success. Frankly, retirees depend on the BWL’s successes.
There have been personal changes for me, too. Having become a widower, I met a wonderful woman, Carol, who was a widow. Our courtship began with a dance. We will have been married 2 years this April. I was also fortunate enough to add to my family two step-sons and their families, including, of course, wonderful young grandkids.
