So, this naturally raised some red flags for me. I watched the man as he walked down the row checking to see if the doors were locked. Then he walked up to an emergency exit, which was clearly labeled “alarms will sound,” and opened it. The alarms started blaring, and people were confused at what was happening.
One week earlier, a man had walked into a church service and shot the pastor in the chest, killing him instantly. Just imagine, we had been watching this on TV for the last week, and now it appears to be happening at my own church.
As I was sitting in service, a staff member slapped me on the shoulder and said, “Ryan, we think that guy is an active shooter. Go to the children's building, tell them what's happening and secure the building.” So I jumped up, ran next door and began locking the doors and placing guards on each door. I decided to guard the main door. As I was standing next to the door, I thought to myself, “This whole wall is made of glass. What am I going to do if this guy shoots through the glass?” At this moment, I realized I had made a critical mistake. The wolf was at the door, and I was a sheep. Thankfully, the man was detained and arrested before anyone was shot.
After the situation was over, I drove to a gun store and purchased a Glock 19. I found my “why,” which was to never again put myself in a situation where people could die and I couldn’t stop it. I have spent the last 10 years training and preparing for the next time I may find myself in a similar situation. I train for a lot more than how to use my weapon. I train in first aid, situational awareness, force-on-force shooting and much more. I carry my firearm every day, 100% of the time I’m legally allowed to. I’ve made the decision to come home to my family, and I’m not going to allow someone to take my family from me.
‘Why?’
What is your “why?” Why is it important for you to carry a concealed weapon? I ask this question at the beginning of every class I teach, and I hear a wide variety of answers.
A Strong ‘Why’
Recently I met a woman who was a victim of rape. Since her violent encounter, she has been attending self-defense classes and firearm courses, and finally received her concealed weapons permit. This young woman has made the decision to never allow this to happen to her again.
