pistol, we begin by removing the magazine and locking the slide to the rear. Then we visually and physically inspect the chamber to ensure that the firearm is unloaded. If you're distracted, in a hurry or just lazy, it's easy to forget a step and end up with a hole in your body you weren’t born with.
Always Know What is in Front of and Beyond Your Target
Firearm safety rule number seven is always know what is in front of and beyond your target. Knowing what is in front of and beyond your target is critical to everyone's safety while you’re shooting a firearm. Just imagine you’re excited to shoot your gun in the backyard, so you set up a range area with a target and begin shooting. Suddenly you realize that a child has been shot while playing in the woods behind your target. Before you shoot, it is your responsibility to know exactly where the bullet is going to stop.
If you’re at a gun range, the bullet will stop when it hits the backstop. If you’re shooting on private property, you should create a pile of dirt, also called a berm, to stop your bullets. Discharging your firearm into the air or into the forest is unacceptable and extremely dangerous. You are responsible for the bullet after it leaves the barrel. If you make sure your bullet is going towards a safe place, you’re one step closer to becoming a safe and reliable firearms owner.
