Fleet 31 had its usual busy season for 2022. With only a handful of weeks on
our calendar, once racing starts it’s hard not to feel busy!
In our effort to grow participation and enjoyment, a few twists were added last
summer. We opened our season with our first-ever Ensign clinic. Several
seasoned racers provided their boats and expertise to share rigging/tuning
advice, deck layout thoughts, as well as time on the water working on all points of
sail. Several new sailors (as well as non-racing Ensign owners) took advantage
of the opportunity and used the training to participate in a new event dubbed the
Round the Bays Rally.
For those familiar with the Les Cheneaux Islands, you’re aware of the vast
number of potential courses within the island chain. On a gorgeous sunny
Saturday in July with about 10 knots of breeze, thirteen Ensigns sailed a course
that crossed a couple of channels and touched into four different bays. It was
agreed that, while still a scored event, it was a low stress way to join the group
and compete. We will be repeating the event for 2023 and look forward to
introducing even more of our sizable fleet to the pleasures of casual competition.
The RC also took advantage of some nice weather on a couple of days and took
the fleet out onto the open waters of Lake Huron. We are spoiled by the close
56
