Fleet 37 had another busy year! We haven’t added any new boats to the fleet yet
but we are excited to Go Ensign Sailing on Lake Michigan as much as we can.
The two Ensigns that are privately owned in the fleet spent 2022 out and about,
with Dick Beverly’s Tracy (#983) making quite a few forays out to mingle with the
Milwaukee Community Sailing Center (MCSC) fleet. The MCSC fleet always
knows when Yoffie (#987) or Tracy are out, because they are the only two
Ensigns in Milwaukee Harbor with engines! On a light wind day that means we
see them moving smartly through the harbor while the MCSC fleet rows (with a
paddle!) or gets a tow in.
Besides the thousands of hours the MCSC fleet gets from Opening Day (April 30)
to Closing Day (October 23) with open sailing, they also got out for the Sunday
Racing “series”—we don’t keep score on these days, as it’s for learning and
having serious…fun, with an average of twelve Ensigns on the line every time.
In 2022, our four regular season regattas were held: The Mid-Season
Championship, The Quarterbarrel Regatta, The Fall Championship, and the
Ensign Championship.
Racing at MCSC looks a little different than it does in other fleets, as we are a
sailing school and the boats are meant for everyday use of the entry-level sailor.
For instance, of MCSC’s 30 Ensigns, only two meet the One Design Ensign
