Expressing Conditions: Using Otherwise and Or (else)

                           Think Tank!

                       WRITING TIP

Reread the passage "Optimists vs. Pessimists." Note that there is a variety

                       of longer and shorter sentences.
It is important to remember to vary your own sentence style to make your

writing more interesting. Good writers use a combination of shorter and longer,
more complex sentences. For example, you can use a transition word with a period

to create a shorter sentence, but a semicolon to create a longer one.
While it is desirable to use sentence connectors, make sure that not all of

your sentences become long and elaborate. Too many connecting words can

make your writing seem repetitious. And remember that not all sentences need
                       connecting words!
