Conclusion
While the integration of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital
shepherds in a necessary period of acute change for each organization, the creation of a new health
network will ultimately realize many benefits for employees, patients and community.
Conducting the cultural assessment not only reinforced a “good fit” through the shared values of the
Sisters of St. Joseph at each site, it also highlighted the opportunities, and challenges, within each
organization from the employees’ perspective. Building on the report’s findings and recommendations
promises to make for an informed and successful progression to future next steps.
More importantly even, is the feedback of all who participated. There was a consistent appreciation for
having the opportunity to “be heard” and asked their opinions as part of the planning stages. Given the
fierce loyalty within each organization, and the level of anxiety over the change, the assessment exercise
set a demonstrated standard that employees’ opinions are valued, and will continue to be valued, as the
integration process moves forward.
