P. 24
Introducing…
In this issue, we’re launching a regular photo spread of con-
struction, surface mining or dredging action at a selected site. The
images will primarily be from the HCEA Archives, although every-
one is invited to contribute through donations or loans. At least
three related images would be ideal. The images need to be of good
enough quality to print presentably, and background information is
very important.
In this issue, we’re visiting Richland County, Wisconsin, in the
ON SITE 1920s by means of some wonderfully captioned images donated by
Vern Racek. Thanks so much, Vern!
A Buckeye Traction Ditcher wheel trencher, powered by a 1-cylinder gas engine, is cutting trench for drainage tile. Palmer & Fish of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, is the contractor. In the background
is a 1926 Ruggles truck owned by Charles Gillingham.
A typical motor grader of the time, combining elements of a pull grader and industrial trac-
tor, is being operated by Perlie Gocheaur under the supervision of Road Engineer T. W. Reilly.
This P & H shovel, likely a ½ yard 203-A, is cutting a diversion channel to keep a creek away The grader is powered by a McCormick-Deering 15-30 power unit.
