production. The difference today appears to be the rising pace of
Emergence.
In every case, the opportunities created by Emergence in the technical
context have facilitated shifts in the social system, so we saw changes
from near feudal management of the 19th century, to Taylorism and
the people-centric thinking of the Human Relations School. The same
is happening today as the Emergence of the mass communications of
the Internet rewrite the social conventions of discussion and stimulate
such phenomena as social activism and instant outrage through
virality facilitated by social platforms.
The 'Fractal Organization': Yet another Fad?
As business has journeyed from the Industrial Age to the Information
Age there has been a veritable flood of management fads. Many, we
have referenced in this Guide: such as empowerment, self-
organization, agility, and so on. Some have stuck or been adapted;
others have disappeared or been subsumed. Is the Fractal
Organization such a fad?
For those wishing to give speeches at conferences and in search of a
catchy title; maybe it is a 'fad'. But, it is also the current contender as
an omnibus term for the driving principles for organizing in the 21st
century. It captures the core ideas of complexity and though we believe
it is less clear where applied inside bounded organizations, we see that
as easily corrected by invoking Ashby's Law.
The term is relatively new. It has a good chance of sticking around at
least until a sexier title is coined.
