6) Colour
Colour will impact the cost and look of the finished brochure. You can stretch your dollar by being innovative with design and using just two colours. Or you may be using images that really demand the four-colour treatment.
When it comes to colour considerations, it’s all about the text and design of the content. A great two- colour piece will out-perform an average four-colour piece. However, it has been proven that if the content and design are the same or similar, four-colour definitely gets the most attention.
7) Proof and print.
After all design and copy elements have been agreed upon, it’s time to proof your brochure. Anyone who has been close to the project should NOT be responsible for the proofing – it’s virtually impossible to see your own errors. Pass the brochure around to other people in your department or in Corporate Communications to get the benefit of their “fresh eyes.”
8) Keep a file
Get ready for next time. No matter how wonderful the brochure is, it will need to be updated from time to time. Keep a folder of all potential changes and ways to make improvements on the next go around.
9) Avoid common mistakes
Think big picture. Your brochure is just one component of your marketing message. Make sure it complements your other pieces, advertising, and overall marketing message.
Beware of “do-it-yourself” options. Design is about more than the computer or template you use and the software you run. It can be tempting to cut corners by eliminating a designer from the process and using a desktop publishing program. Quite often this option leads to an inferior piece and more work as you may be requested to re-do the piece. By consulting with Corporate Communications 519-575-4008 and Corporate Publishing 519-575-4538 you will be guaranteed a successful brochure.

Winter 2012
Communities across Canada and around the world are coping with significant change and uncertainty. Although people and businesses in Waterloo Region are still dealing with the effects of the recession, our community continues to have many good things going on.
ways the Region is helping our community grow and prosper:
• Building a rapid transit system
• The Region continues to improve our community’s physical backbone by investing in infrastructure upgrades. We’re improving our roads and bridges, upgrading and expanding our wastewater treatment plants and redeveloping brownfield sites to make better use of land and existing infrastructure.
There are many factors that set this area apart. A combination of technology, academia, business, philanthropy and a strong entrepreneurial spirit have made Waterloo Region ripe for success. Unlike many Canadian cities, our population is growing, our core areas are thriving and many of our local businesses remain strong. Much of this success can be attributed to strategic decision- making by the Region of Waterloo. Regional Council and staff work hard to make important decisions that will have a positive impact on this community today and for years to come. Here are some of the

Take the low-salt challenge this winter
Winter – a Canadian tradition of snow and ice. Safety is important but using large amounts of salt isn’t the answer. Salt doesn’t work in all temperatures and it can damage our clothes, cars and the environment. When snow melts, excessive salt can be absorbed in to the ground – and into our drinking water.
