Y5 Summer Term. Writing Words (WW)
The children may like to write questionnaires to gather information from the classes (see
separate sheet as an example). Teachers of younger classes may need to assist in this

process. Children may prefer to interview children and staff directly changing direct speech
        into reported speech.

The newspaper may be typed up in ICT lessons and digital photographs added.

        LESSON 7

(This lesson needs to be taught on a hot summer’s day)

        A Hot Summer’s Day
Take the children outside to experience a hot summer’s day. Let them use their senses to
write down what they can hear, see, smell, taste (imagine or taste real berries, ice-cream,
        milkshake, etc) and touch.

Read and discuss the poem ‘A Hot Summer’s Day’ by AS Tessimond (see separate sheet).
Talk about ideas, vocabulary, phrases, clauses, etc.

               www.myvoiceworks.co.uk/new2/uploads/GRADE%203%20POEMS.pdf

Let the children write a passage or poem of their own describing a summer’s day, perhaps as
        if to a blind person.

        LESSONS 8-10

        Planning a party or picnic
Refer to previous schools outings, sleepovers, etc and let the children try to list all the

arrangements that would need to be made. Remind them of the importance of thanking
organisers of such events afterwards. Let them work in groups for two weeks to arrange a
school party or picnic for lesson 10. Perhaps each group could cover one aspect of the
whole event. They should consider: -
                   • Booking a venue (school hall, field, etc)

                   • Time
                   • People to be invited
                   • Invitations

                   • People needing to be informed of timetable changes, etc
                   • Food required/menu
                   • Crockery, cutlery, etc
                   • Shopping, cooking
                   • Costs

                   • Clearing up arrangements
                   • Writing thank you letters
