Y6 Autumn Term Part 2. CW Lesson 8
CONTRACTING AND EXTENDING SENTENCES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Adjectives and adverbs add interest and information to sentences.
When taking notes sentences can be shortened by omitting unnecessary
descriptive words.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Let the children go around the room to find, and shorten, the sentences pinned
up on the walls (see separate sheet). They could write notes in their rough
books. Warn them that many adjectives and adverbs can be eliminated from
the sentences.
3. Gather back to share. Emphasise that whilst adjectives and adverbs are
valuable in creative writing, they are often unnecessary when taking notes, or
for factual writing.
4. Put some simple sentences on the board for the children to extend with
adjectives and adverbs.
E.g. The cat chased the mouse.
The boy did his homework.
The people prayed for the girl.
5. Let the children try the worksheet.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be confident in identifying and using adjectives and
adverbs.
2. They should have had more experience at note-taking, recognising the
descriptive words to leave out.
