THE SKELETON
There is a skeleton inside every human being. It is made up of two hundred and six bones, all linked
together. These bones help people to move, and they also protect soft parts of the body. The
skeleton is one of God’s wonderful works. It shows His wisdom and His power to create.
The skull
The skull is at the top of the skeleton.
Its rounded shape protects the brain.
Parts of the eyes, ears, nose and
mouth are set in the skull. The
jawbone can be moved to let a person
open his mouth.
The ribs
The ribs form a kind of cage around a
person’s upper body. They protect
the heart and lungs. They are joined
to the breast bone at the front and to
the spine at the back.
The spine
The spine or backbone is actually
made up of thirty-three little bones.
It is shaped like a tower, and its
clever design allows the back to bend.
The arms and legs
There are long, strong bones in both
the arms and legs, with many small
bones in the hands and feet. Where
bones meet other bones they are
carefully shaped to make joints. The
joints allow the body to move.
