3.2.5. Participation in the Unisa First Year Experience (FYE) Programme
During 2019 the Department of Library and Information Services participated in the Unisa First Year Experience (FYE) programme development. The Unisa Library was represented by the Branch Librarian to this FYE programme presenting library training using an online platform with a chat platform for students to ask a question. The library was addressing the information competencies (library orientation, information search skills, etc.) in this programme.
4. Unisa Library research support highlights
4.1. Research support in the Unisa Library Archives
The strategic focus of the Archives and Special Collections section is to receive, appraise, arrange, make available and preserve records of historical, legal, research, academic and/or administrative value to the University of South Africa and its clients, thereby supporting research, learning and tuition. This service is located on the Muckleneuk campus and the items are available for browsing in the Reading Room and some collections are available for online browsing in the Unisa Library Digital

Collections. During 2019, 30 international researchers and 125 South African researchers visited the Archives
to consult information resources. During October 2019, Mr Anil Nauriya (advocate at the Supreme Court in New Delhi and author of the book The African Element in Gandhi) visited the Archives.
4.1.1. Supporting the oldest man to obtain a doctorate degree
The oldest man to obtain a doctorate degree at Unisa, 91-year- old Andries Conradie, spent the last ve years doing part of his research at the Unisa Archives and Special Collections. Dr Conradie was assisted by the team of archivists with information relevant to his research. Ms Ammi Ryke attended his graduation ceremony on 8 October 2019.
