7.6. Exhibitions and donations
7.6.1. Donation to the University of Somalia
A new memorandum of understanding saw the Unisa Library supporting the University of Somalia with a donation of books and other information resources. On the 12th December 2019, Dr Daisy Selematsela and the Library Executive Team donated more than 30 000 books to the Somali National Library and the Somali National University (SNU). The Unisa Library is looking forward to more opportunities for collaboration with and support for our Somalian counterparts.
Donations to library partners 2019
Each year the Unisa Library donates a selection of books that have been weeded (written off) from its Collection. This is done to promote worldwide learning and literacy, and as an opportunity for the Unisa Library to bridge the gap in access to quality academic and leisure reading material in our communities. The donation is made in a spirit of sharing the good fortune of the well-stocked library, especially with those who are most in need. The donation is freely given with no nancial implications, with the exception that the books need to be collected. In 2019 about 35 700 books were donated to Non-pro t organisations e.g. Schools, community libraries, correctional service centres and churches.
The following table shows the institutions who bene ted from the donations during 2019:
