delivery of mobile library services. Unisa supply chain process challenges led to the mobile library bus project hitting snags. But Regions and the Library are currently looking into new proposals that include using smaller buses to cut costs and salvage the project.
8.3. RFID challenges
Aging infrastructure for RFID Library Technology continue to create a challenge for both staff and clients at most branches. The Library is challenged with maintenance and service of RFID machines. In most libraries both the RFID drop boxes and the self-return workstations are sitting idle as they are not working.
9. Staff achievements
9.1. Unisa Library hosting DST – NRF Interns
The Unisa Library hosted Library and Information Sciences graduates as part of the DST – NRF Internship Programme 2019/2020. The graduates were provided with the opportunity to acquire practical work experience and mentoring by Unisa Library staff members in the various operational divisions.
In 2019, the Unisa Library welcomed Ms Snenhlanhla (Sne) Hlongwana and Mr Karabo Malesela Reuben Madiba as part of the internship programme which will run until from 2019 - 2020. This is what Sne and Karabo had to say about their experience:
Karabo: “This experience has been as great as I had anticipated. The staff that I have worked with here at the Library are skilled and competent in their respective elds. It’s a privilege to be learning from them.”
Sne: Sne: “Getting a chance to be hosted by the Unisa Library is like a life-changing opportunity. This institution is well recognised and for me to be part of it is of great advantage. I have grasped a lot so far and I can now comfortably say I’m well-groomed for the corporate world. Thank you Unisa for giving me the platform to kick-start my career.”
