9.2. Staff training and development
Staff had the opportunity to attend the Human Resources Development (HRD) offerings during the year such as the Assertiveness Skills course and the Meetings and Minutes Workshop. Two Library Management staff members were nominated to attend the HRD  agship management and leadership training programme called Building Tomorrow’s Leaders.
More than sixty-three percent of the Library staff members attended various library-related conferences, workshops and training sessions. These conferences, workshops and training sessions provided valuable training and development opportunities for Library staff. Twenty-six Library staff members attended the 2019 Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Conference, thirty-seven Library staff members attended the 2019 Innovation Users Group of South Africa Conference, the Cataloguers attended the LIASA Interest Group for Bibliographic Standards (IGBIS) Workshop, and the Information Processors attended the LIASA Interlending Interest Group (ILLIG) Workshop. Library staff also attended training interventions such as:
• The International Conference on Information Literacy,
• The 48th Annual Conference of the Southern African Computer Lecturers’,
• The Open Book Festival 2019,
• Eresearch Africa 2019 Conference,
• The South African Society of Archivists Annual Conference,
• International Conference on the 4th Industrial Revolution and Library Practices, • The Ethics Institute 9th Annual Conference,
• Joburg Secretaries Day Conference,
• Social Media and Electronic Communications Workshop,
• Trauma Counselling and Trauma Management Workshop, and
• The 2019 Purchasing Consortium Southern Africa (PURCO) Conference.
An estimated amount of one million rands was spent on training and development in 2019 by the Department of Library and Information Services. The conferences and workshops are summarised below:
