Rounding Cash Transactions to the Nearest Five Cents in Canada

Canada discontinued the circulation of pennies (1 cent coin) in February 2013. For cash transactions,
businesses round the final sale amount either up or down to the nearest five-cent increment (to the
                             nearest nickel).
Examples of rounding cash transactions to the nearest five cents:

                                                             Rounding Up or Down
Final Sale Amount Cash Payment Amount
                                                             to the Nearest 5 cents
                                             $15.31 or $15.32 Round down $15.30

                                             $16.43 or $16.44 Round up $16.45
                                             $18.56 or $18.57 Round down $18.55

                                             $19.98 or $19.19 Round up $20.00
Note: Payments made by debit, credit cards, and cheques or online do not change and are settled to the
                                  exact amount.
